Among the white stones and golden light of Málaga now lives a poem. Ciudad del Paraíso (City of Paradise), a tribute by Nobel laureate Vicente Aleixandre to the city of his youth, has been engraved on a wooden façade between the Palacio de la Aduana and the Alcazaba.
This heartfelt homage brings poetry to the streets and reconnects Málaga with one of its most passionate voices.
The connection between Vicente Aleixandre and Málaga runs deep: though born in Seville, the poet spent his childhood and early youth in this coastal city, where the Mediterranean sea, light, and landscape shaped his vision.
A Life Dedicated to Poetry and Beauty
After briefly practicing law, Aleixandre’s true path began during recovery from illness—writing poetry. He soon became a central figure of the Generation of ’27, alongside Lorca and Cernuda. His work, rich in metaphors and emotional depth, evolved from pure poetry to surrealist forms and ultimately to a more human-centered voice.
Aleixandre was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy, and in 1977, his literary legacy was crowned with the Nobel Prize in Literature. This recognition elevated not just his own work, but the entire Generation of ’27.
City of Paradise
To my city, Málaga
My eyes always see you, city of my marine days.
Hanging from the towering mountain, barely stopped
In your vertical fall into the blue waves,
You seem to reign beneath the sky, above the waters…
Light streets, musical, barely there. Gardens
where tropical flowers raise their youthful thick palms…
And I was led there by a mother’s hand…
A puff of eternity could have destroyed you,
O wondrous city, emerging in the mind of a god…
There the sky was you, city dwelling in the air.
City flying within it, your wings outstretched.
— Vicente Aleixandre
Málaga, City of Poets and Water
Málaga is not only beaches and sunshine—it’s also a source of poetic, natural, and emotional inspiration. At Hammam Al Ándalus Málaga, we embrace this spirit of beauty and reflection. Our rituals are inspired by the very elements that shaped Vicente Aleixandre’s vision: water, air, light, and time.
